What does the term "vitamins" mean?

Vitamins are organic compounds found naturally in food. Vitamins help us absorb nutrients from foods we eat. Vitamins cannot be produced by the body. They must be acquired from food.

There are two types: water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve quickly in water. These include vitamin C (thiamine), Vitamin B1 (riboflavin), Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (niacin), Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), Vitamin C, B1 (thiamine), Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (niacin), and Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine). Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the liver, fatty tissue and kidneys. Examples include vitamin D, E, K, A, and beta carotene.

Vitamins are classified according to their biological activity. There are eight major vitamin groups:

  • A - Vital for normal growth and maintaining good health.
  • C – essential for proper nerve function.
  • D - Vital for healthy bones and teeth
  • E - needed for good vision and reproduction.
  • K - essential for healthy muscles, nerves, and bones.

For adults over 19 years, the RDA is 400 mg per day for vitamin A. For fetal development, pregnant women need 600 mg per day. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Infants below one year old require 700mg per day. But, between 9 months to 12 months, the amount drops to 500mg per day.

Children between the ages 1--18 years old who are overweight or obese require 800 micrograms per Day, while those who are overweight or obese need 1000 micrograms. To meet their nutritional needs, children underweight and obese require 1200 micrograms a day.

2200 mg of vitamin A per day is required for children aged 4-8 who have been diagnosed by anemia.

2000 micrograms per person is necessary for general health. Mothers who are pregnant, nursing, or have a high nutrient need will require 3000 micrograms a day.

1500 micrograms are required daily by adults over 70 because they lose approximately 10% of their muscle each decade.

Women who are pregnant, nursing or breastfeeding need more than the RDA. Pregnant and breastfeeding women require 4000 micrograms each day during pregnancy and 2500 Micrograms each day after delivery. Breastfeeding mothers need 5000 mg per day when breastmilk is being produced.
